The School was established in 1997. Valand Academy (Swedish: Akademin Valand) is a school for film, photography, literary composition, and fine art at the University of Gothenburg in Gothenburg, Sweden. It was formed in 2012 through the merger of three formerly independent schools/departments at the University of Gothenburg. Based in the centre of Gothenburg, HDK-Valands facilities on Vasagatan 50 where the programme is cunducted, is closely integrated into the city’s cultural life. The facilities consists of lecture spaces, studios, several well-equipped workshops as well as two student-run galleries.

Rather than preparing students for a specific professional role, we give filmmakers a broad education and the opportunity for in-depth study in an area of their choosing. The School of Film Directing is part of the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University of Gothenburg, and it is the most recent addition to film directing programmes in Sweden. The School was established in 1997. Through existing exchange programs with the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf in Berlin, Germany and the Film and Television Department at The Wits School of Arts, the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, there are possibilities to study part of the program abroad. In 2016 she was recipient of the Cilect (Association of International Film Schools) Teaching Award in recognition for innovation in practices in film research and pedagogy. She has supervised creative arts PhD’s to completion and currently supervises PhD candidates at HDK-Valand at University of the Gothenburg and the Wits School of Arts Marcus Carlsson was educated at the Film School at the University of Gothenburg and was recognised for his film diploma project and full-length feature film debut "Din barndom ska aldrig dö" with Adam Lundgren in one of the main roles.
